Welcome to Antietam Elementary School!
Boris Spassky Move Over
Boris Spassky was an amazing chess player, a World Class Champion, holding the title from 1969 to 1972. At the age of 16, he was a Grand Master. He is known as one of the greatest living chess players in the world. Antietam students are in training, preparing to challenge his record by learning the game and competing in local competitions. This past Saturday. 158 elementary, middle, and high school students from across the school division participated in Antietam's County-wide Chess Tournament. Competition was stiff and many students proudly carried home medals and trophies as a result of their efforts. Antietam won second place in the primary division. Thank you to the many parents who helped coach our chess club and to those who pitched in and lent a hand to make the tournament a huge success. Chess Club is a great way to hone strategy, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills; besides it is a fun game to play.

A Budding Artist
Congratulations to Hanna Brayant, 4th grade student, who recently had her artwork selected for display during the 2012-2013 school-year as part of the Student Art Collection for Prince William County Schools at the Kelly Leadership Center. Hanna’s work was selected from hundreds of pieces of art on display at the PWCS All–County Arts Festival held at Hylton High School. Her drawing, “Farm Landscape”, was created using colored pencil, pen and ink, and was inspired by a study of Grandma Moses.
Life-long Physical Activity
One of the many goals of the Physical Education curriculum is to instill in students a desire and the skills to pursue life-long physical activities to maintain health and wellness. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students are experiencing an authentic opportunity to bowl, not in a bowling truck, but on the lanes, as Ms. Sitnik teaches the sport of bowling.
We Come From Many Lands
Thank you, Antietam families, for helping make our Multi-Cultural Night a huge success. We appreciate all the parents and staff who cooked and shared delicious delicacies from many different countries around the world. Our students were so proud of the research they conducted into all the different countries they investigated. Their work products were amazing. Thank you to everyone who attended! It is so much fun to learn about the music, art, language and culture of all the different countries that Antietam families call “home.”
A Special Visit From Good Friends
Antietam students and staff were thrilled to host a visit from our Sister School in Toyama, Japan. Our visitors from the Toyama International Studies University High School traveled to Virginia to participate in the 100th Anniversary of the gift of the cherry trees to Washington, practice their blossoming English language skills, visit our school to participate in our Multi-Cultural event, and see the beautiful dolls that they created and gave to us two years ago during a Friendship Doll Exchange. Our guests visited classrooms (they especially enjoyed visiting kindergarten), observed in art, music, and PE class, and joined students for lunch in the cafeteria. They spent the afternoon demonstrating their origami skills and creating beautiful boats, fish, and birds for our students.
It's Time to Register for Kindergarten
Kindergarten Registration Dates Set
Kindergarten registration for the 2012–2013 school-year will be held Thursday, April 12 and Thursday, April 26 at Antietam Elementary School. Parents should contact the front office to check for specific registration times.

Classrooms Receive the Key to Success for On-Time Arrivals
Each week, classrooms are awarded the key to success for arriving to school on-time each day. Several classes have earned many keys and are collecting them to distribute to students at the end of the school year. So far this year, Ms. Mc Fadden’s fifth grade students have earned the most keys for on-time arrivals. Following close behind, are Ms. Claussen’s third grade class, Ms. Watts’ fourth grade class, and Ms. Croisitiere's second grade class.
Parents, you can help your child’s class earn a key to success! All you have to do is help your student arrive at school on-time each and every morning. We appreciate your support and so does your child's classroom.
A Great Way to Start the Day: Breakfast
Did you know that a hot breakfast is served in every PWCS school every morning? Eating a nutritious breakfast is an important way to start each day. Studies show that children who eat breakfast are better prepared to participate in the day’s learning activities than those who start the day without breakfast or eat a bowl of sugar-laden cereal. Every child deserves the security of waking up to a healthy meal at the start of each day. Beginning the day without breakfast has an immediate and long-term effect on children:
• Studies show that elementary students who eat breakfast have better behavioral and academic performance.
• Breakfast contributes to long-term health and well-being for kids.
• A healthy breakfast contributes to decreased obesity.
School breakfast is associated in a positive way with improved scores on standardized achievement tests, and a lower rate of both absenteeism and tardiness. Students eligible for free or reduced price lunch are also eligible for free or reduced price breakfast. The School Breakfast Program provides federal funds for school breakfast programs and helps keep the cost low. Antietam breakfasts are yummy; they feature whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Encourage your student to try eating breakfast at school one morning and see how yummy breakfast is.
10 Years School of Excellence
Antietam Elementary has recently been named a 2011-2012 School of Excellence based on data from the 2010-2011 school-year. Points are awarded for making AYP and maintaining Accreditation, the percentage of students earning Pass Advanced scores on the SOLs, student achievement within 6 subgroups in both mathematics and reading, satisfaction scores on student, staff, and community surveys, and wellness scores on the Governor's scorecard. Schools must earn 90 out of a possible 100 points. Antietam earned 97 points. Seventeen other PWCS schools were named with Antietam Elementary School as Schools of Excellence.
Way to Go Antietam Mustangs!
Recently announced by Gov. McDonnell and the Virginia Department of Education, are the names of schools from across the Commonwealth to earn 2012 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement.  The incentive program recognizes schools that far exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board. Antietam Elementary is proud to be one of the 188 schools to receive the Board of Education Excellence Award. To qualify for the award, schools must meet all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and achieve all applicable excellence goals based on student achievement and other performance indicators. Schools earn bonus points for other performance measures, including the Governor’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Scorecard. Only eleven other elementary schools in Prince William County were recognized in the same manner.
2-Time 100 Best Winner
America’s Promise Alliance has recognized Prince William County as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People. Prince William County is a two-time 100 Best winner, and remains a top place for youth because of programs that assist in developing the skills, knowledge and positive attitudes its young residents will need to succeed in the 21st century workforce.  More than 56 percent of the local budget is allocated for schools, and an additional 10 percent is used to support youth programs. Programs such as Beat the Odds, and Learn and Serve encourage students to take on leadership positions, which allow them to interact with adult mentors. Since its inception, Beat the Odds has provided more than $100,000 for youth-focused programs. The county’s Parents as Educational Partners is a 36-hour parent outreach program designed to educate and empower parents on how to become their children’s biggest advocates. The program has improved English language skills and education among its participants. Today, Prince William County graduates 88 percent of its students, well above the national average.
Happy Healthy Habits
The PWCS Wellness Plan mandates that celebrations make a positive contribution to children’s diets and health. School staff members have been encouraged not to reward students with food items. If families choose to bring food into the school to celebrate a birthday or special occasion, at least one half of the foods offered must be fruits, vegetables, and/or a dairy product. Please keep in mind that many of our students have food allergies to milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, berries, etc. It would be greatly appreciated if parents would provide celebrations that do not focus on food. Student birthdays should be celebrated at home or with a small token for students such as a pencil, notepad, or journal. While discouraged, mini-cupcakes accompanied by fruit (orange half, grapes, watermelon slice) are permissible. Please be reminded that balloons are not permitted in the building as many children are allergic to latex and balloons create a disruption in the classroom. We appreciate your help and cooperation in trying to keep our students healthy and safe.
